The millennia old Maugean Skate could be the world’s first extinction of a shark or ray species due to industrial aquaculture. Less than 1,000 individuals remain in Macquarie Harbour, the skate’s last critical habitat, in Tasmania’s remote wilderness. Environment Tasmania will lead a science-based campaign that engages the Tasmanian community and businesses to build state-wide support for implementing critical actions, as outlined by the Australian Government’s Conservation Advice, to ensure the skate’s survival.
