The purpose of the grant is to support WWF’s work to measurably reduce shark mortality in the Arabian Sea around Pakistan. The project will provide a blueprint for establishing practical approaches to assist management at a national level, including through enhanced expertise. Specific activities will include modification of existing fishing gear and the introduction of new gear to reduce shark bycatch. Improvements in Pakistan will be leveraged into greater regional cooperation within the Arabian Sea, by laying the foundations for a regional coordinated approach to shark and ray management. Specific activities include development of a regional database/data sharing platform that will inform governments on progress as well as areas where government action is lacking. The results of this project will be used to develop a regional strategy for the management of sharks.
