Sabah’s waters provide important habitat for important populations of elasmobranchs. There have been substantial population declines, but sharks and rays remain unprotected legally in Malaysia as they are not part of an ’official’ targeted fishery. This project will introduce effective spatial management for sharks and rays and address bycatch in a holistic manner in Sabah, and will serve as a fisheries management model across other parts of Malaysia, safeguarding these species into the future.
