Despite national protections in Mexico, devil rays are incidentally caught in high numbers in artisanal fisheries. Gillnets, a netting wall than hangs in the water, are particularly problematic. Here we will test the use of LED lights on gillnets to avoid this and assess survival rates of devil rays in the presence of fisheries. The results will inform bycatch mitigation measures that will be developed in close collaboration with the fishing communities and authorities.
