Spatial management tools are increasingly advocated for the protection of biodiversity. Yet, despite a large percentage of marine protected areas designated for the protection of sharks and rays, most currently fail at providing adequate protection. The ‘right’ areas need to be protected for these threatened species. IUCN will delineate scientifically based discrete regions as Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRAs) and use area-based management tools.
