The goal of this project is to reduce the key threat that fisheries pose to manta and mobula rays. The project’s specific objectives are to ensure that:
- Relevant and comprehensive policies are in place to regulate trade and fishing of mobulid rays
- Governments and local communities can support and embrace protective measures
- The Manta Trust charity has a five-year plan and funding strategy for its work on global mobulid conservation.
The first two activities will be carried out in three target countries – Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Peru – as they show a political readiness for engagement and a viability for conservation advancement. They also host some of the world’s largest mobulid fisheries.
