How old is a shark product? Was it acquired legally according to international trade regulations? These are questions that cannot be answered due to the lack of tools available to assess time of capture of sharks and rays. Answering these questions can improve how we approach enforcement of international laws in place to protect endangered species. This project aims to design a novel DNA tool to determine acquisition time of CITES-listed species based on DNA fragmentation rate through time.
