Working with local fisheries, environmental authorities, coastal communities, schools, and journalists, this pilot project brings together anecdotal data from fishers with scientific data to form the basis of Uruguay’s first open database on sharks and rays. It will contribute to conservation measures and policies from local to national levels for sharks to become a flagship species for Uruguay’s MPA's. Together, we will switch the Uruguayan view of sharks from ‘dangerous’ to ‘endangered’.
