Angel sharks (Family Squatinidae) have been identified as one of the most threatened families of chondrichthyans in the world. Three Critically Endangered angel sharks are present with overlapping ranges in the Mediterranean, and with this region recognized as a particular hotspot of extinction risk, the principal goal of this project is to improve the protection of angel sharks in the Mediterranean through the development and delivery of a regional action plan (RAP). It is anticipated that the RAP will effectively increase the profile of angel sharks, classify the threats they face, foster collaboration between stakeholders and coastal states, facilitate the implementation and adoption of legislation, and contribute to goals laid out in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Angel Shark Conservation Strategy.
